| Count a few megs of memory as offset, like 500 bytes/user on the network
| you're on, and then a few kbytes per local user.
|
| On a medium Pentium you can handle around 1000 clients or so. There are
| fast ppros and pIIs handling over 4000 clients on EFnet currently, I am
| not sure about the ircd 2.9 but I am under the impression that it's more
| efficient than the ircd 2.8 derivate used on EFnet.

It's always hard to tell.
irc.stealth.net handles up to 2k users without any problem;
it's a dual p100 with 64Mb of mem.

Note that the both the local and global maximum number of
users is relevant when determining the amount of memory
needed.
