Not to mention how efficient your OS is at handling a bunch of TCP
connections. *BSD and Solaris seems to be preferred by irc admins when it
comes to handling several thousand simultanious clients.

It's also a question about how many you handle "without any problems",
personally I'd like to not use more than 25-30% of available cpu power for
routine work, I'd like to have more to spare for joining/splitting etc.
