you can't beat the 512 limit, they still will be.
(just because they don't grow as fast doesn't mean they won't
grow enough for that to happen.)

killpaths only exist to provide enough relevant information
to make sure that it is possible to go back in time and
understand what happened and debug things.  in particular,
removing the server hidden by a hostmask means that you lose
this ability.  if you're doing this, then you might as well
totally get rid of killpaths.  so ask yourself whether you
can live without them.
taking out the part between [] might make sense for some
cases, but you should be careful. doing this.

and why worry about this when you're about to make collisions
obsolete?
