although I agree I am not sure if a) this is within the scope of his
client implementation as it requires non-standard extensions to the
server and b) a few years ago there was something called NOTE which
could be compiled into the server to do this and a lot of people
didn't like some of the functionality it provided (namele NOTE SPY)
because they felt it was intrusive.

(I liked the functionality,  but I didn't like it much when annoying
people I didn't want to talk to used it to locate me when I logged on)

(perhaps in the future it would be a good idea to implement some
additional information in the signon-sequence, which specifies if the
user wants to be visible to this type of notification services.  sure,
there is mode +i, but this doesn't quite do the job)
