help, ircd 2.9.5 doesn't start

I dowloaded, configured, edited config.h, compiled, installed, and edited
the ircd.conf from a copy of example.conf to suit my needs on my linux
2.0.30 box. I thought I had done everything okay, until I tried to run the
daemon.  I tried many different variations and parameters, but it seems it
just starts and dies immediately. 

Is there any error log file that I can look at to diagnose this?
Have any of you had this problem?
What do you think is happening?
