Hi All, Previously in this thread 2 things have been suggested, to get to one goal... 1/ Make #-channels modeless.. 2/ Swap !-channels for #channels.. IMHO you are not going to get everyday users (probably 99% of IRCnet) using !channels...the reason: mIRC channel list... by default it lists #channels - that's why people use them - that list of channels are the ones the war kiddies want (plus others of course) The other things you have to take into account when deciding on the course action you wish to follow, is: 1/ Everyone must agree (Server Admins). 2/ The kiddies (& war groups) love showing 'power'. - Take that away from them and they get bored _quickly_. 3/ Whether or not it makes life more difficult for the average user. 4/ Some people make money out of abusing. (spammers) For at least one of these reasons converting #channels to modeless channels may not work. Changing ! to # and visa-versa may also not work for at least one of the above reasons. However, again IMHO, I believe if you want a 'quick' solution one of them is the answer, if you want the solution solved you need to wait for 2.11 and possibly 2.12 (if it gets that far) <BACKGROUND INFO> I no longer use IRCnet, or IRC in general, for a number of reasons - I hear some of you cheer - In fact currently I wouldn't have time if I wanted to. One of the reasons I do not use IRCnet is due to LoboLoco, another that I took time to setup another network called CMDnet, which used IRCnet ircd code, and included ChanServ, NickServ, OperServ (amongst other services). It wasn't long before this network collected Servers and Users at one point we got to 308 users I beleive (not much to the 55,000 of IRCnet I know).... However the 3 _really_ popular channels which people came to our net were killed by an IRCnet Oper and his floodbots (who will remain nameless - but FYI is in the UK). Then came the de-linking of a couple of UK servers - one of which came to CMDnet for a _short_ period, complete with _lots_ of users - CMDnet grew again, then a UK IRCnet Oper (surprise) told the admins of that server that they would _never_ be re-linked to IRCnet if they were seen to be linked to CMDnet in _any_ way - Suprise it was de-linked! There marks the end of CMDnet. Oh and for those who don't know: 'LoboLoco aka SirReal [holeekow@xxxxxxxxx] ~ #cybersex' - 40+ years old, quiet as a mouse until someone threatens to through him out of channel/ban him from a server, then he will do _anything_ to ensure he doesn't loose - including writing you your employers about your activities (whether true or false - logs are provided). Catching him (and his war group that preaches peace/nospam) advertising a porn site hosted in London UK (where beastiality is illegal) and providing New Scotland Yard with enough evidence to prosecute at least one member was the biggest way to upset him. The other reason - currently I am involved in providing 'expert' evidence, for the UK police in a homemade Napalm bomb case where the 'build' information came from the Internet. </BACKGROUND INFO> Note: Comment on the background info if you wish, however it is likely that I will not answer - if you don't like it ignore it, if you are one of the subjects I will ignore you. Constructive comments on the first part of the mail welcome. -- Yours Matthew -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- At least I have a positive attitude about my destructive habits.
