Hmm, as for other software... It's been seen that breaking server-server
compatibility (with old versions) intentionally, and announcing this, in
addition to setting the transition day a long time in advance, will have
some advantages over other methods-

The protocol (the part which is not visible to the users) can get rid of
all the glitches and kludges that had to be there for  compatibility and
go for  greater flexibility,  which is (IMO) alright  with a  new  major
release.

However,  I'm not certain if the dev-team  wants to take the opportunity
(or if they consider it worthwhile).  Perhaps partly  in favor  of other
networks (though, small) running the code  and wishing to have  2.10 and
2.11 intercompatibility.
