I'm sure that he means that smurf attacks are mainly directed at servers, not
users. Most abuse tools have counter patches available - baring smurf and the
other bandwidth related 'weapons'

However IMHO hiding hostmasks allow for abuse, bot and otherwise, hiding part
hostmasks means that all small-medium ISP's will get smurfed and takeovers will
come from ISP's with huge bandwidth's, not to mention the fact that whilst
servers can be smurfed, attacks failing on a user (whom are usually abusing to
get 'attacked') because of hidden hostmask will warrant a server attack -
affecting, possibly 1000's of users....

The only real way of stopping the abuse of users/servers is to stop the abusers
of the system from getting the power in the first place, or even giving them the
desire to get the power - easy solution get rid of _all_ the abusers - without
question..... IRCnet & other nets would be come a nicer place - even with only
100 users left out of 34,000.

Abusers/abuse will only be stopped with effective 'policing' - and that means too
much work - particually for some admins - and the good work of some admins
against the lazyness of others create great feeling of satisfaction with some of
the abusers, especially when they use it to their advantage...... I would say
that this is wandering from the topic though... probably better to direct this
mail to other lists.....
