Christophe -- Thanks for getting back to me.  I did check the chkconf file and it 
seems to be o.k.

initconf(): ircd.conf = ircd.conf
initconf(): ircd dir  = /usr/local/lib/irc

I do have the ircd dir in /usr/local/lib/irc

I am also looking at the Y and the I lines in my ircd.conf file.  At least it gives 
me something to work with.

inetd support is not functional in 2.9.2,
you need to run the server in standalone mode.

`/etc/ircd -d /etc' should be fine.

you should try to run chkconf which is included in the
distribution.  It will point out problems with your
configuration file.
