Can you also document starting ircd other than root. i have RHL 6.2 and running ircd. it works fine but i have to start is as root and it stays running as root. any other way i get permission denied or cannot chroot to /home/ircd. yes i tried changing ownership and gave chmod 777 on all. i did make a user called ircd.

You do not have to chroot an ircd.. its perfectly possible for it to run as a non-root user, without being chrooted. chroot is more secure though.

You made the ircd user, but are you starting ircd as that user? Does that ircd user have access to the ircd itself? Is the ircd installed in the ircd users home, or is it installed somewhere else? If its elsewhere, does it own the ircd files and have the appropriate priviledges?

Are you actually starting the ircd as the ircd user? By either logging as the ircd user, or "su - ircd" to them (as root), or starting it via sudo.
