Hi there,
horrible choice of colours you had there.:)
Anyway, ircd-users@xxxxxxx deals
with IRCNet's ircd, namely ircd2.10.x . Ircnet is a conservative network
and does not believe in nickname or channel services, its first come first
served basis, but does have a noteserv or a memo-serv. details on how to use it
on http://irc.fu-berlin.de/noteserv/ .
I suggest that you try to use IRCNet, simply download mirc from www.mirc.co.uk and choose IRCNet as method and
connection server after filling the details. have a look around and see if this
is what you need for your students, IRCNet is a global network of over 100
servers covering the planet serving over 250,000 users aday with peak users at
around 45,000 users. a great way of communicating with people from all around
the world, and to find help and fresh ideas on all sorts of stuff, especially
computers-related subjects. Have a look for yourself.
The second point is, to get effective and stable IRCD running I strongly
suggest using a *nix operating system, like Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris etc. ircd
will run on a windows machine but with crippled capabilities and minimal usage
time, where you have to reboot NT twice aday or so. Just to tease you heres a
list of uptime of current ircnet servers http://irc.tu-ilmenau.de/ and some extra
details on them. 225 days without a reboot is an amazing thing, which NT cant
handle.
Ircnet latest ircd is on ftp.irc.org its version 2.10.3 , I suggest reading
the docs that comes with it, read www.funet.fi/~irc www.stealth.net/~kalt/irc as well.
Remmber ircd is free, and most unix like operating systems are free too, so
theres no loss trying them.
Good luck with your upgrade :)
