debug is in s_debug, and that's what has the stuff that needs varargs...

Of course it's called from everywhere, so if the calling conventions
changed a single diff wouldn't help.

What version is it good in? It's conceivable I could switch to that
version if certain things are similar enough (mainly m_message and the
way readbuf is handled).

Of course, I really needed it to find out where the mangled strings are
coming from, and I figured that out today (see my next message).
